Nicolas Sarkozy lascia Riad poco prima dell'arrivo del presidente Usa, George W. Bush, e dopo avere firmato accordi per 60 miliardi di dollari in campo militare ed energetico.
Bush ha fatto coincidere il suo arrivo a Riad oggi con la notifica al Congresso della vendita di armi per 20 miliardi di dollari all'Arabia Saudita ed altri paesi del Golfo.
Sarkozy, che dopo l'Arabia Saudita visita il Qatar e gli Emirati Arabi Uniti, ha dichiarato che "la partnership tra Francia ed Arabia Saudita e' entrata in una nuova dimensione strategica".
Sia Bush che Sarkozy sono alla prima visita in Arabia Saudita. Ma quella del presidente Usa viene dopo sette anni alla Casa Bianca, quella del presidente francese dopo sette mesi all'Eliseo.
Tra gli scopi della visita di Bush in Arabia Saudita c'e' quello di isolare l'Iran per il suo programma nucleare. Nel frattempo Sarkozy e' riuscito a firmare una serie di contratti for cooperation in the development of nuclear energy with the UAE. Before the agreement with the Emirates, Sarkozy had already 'sold nuclear power plants in Algeria and Libya.
Both Bush and Sarkozy arrived in Riyadh without their partners: the American president has left the first lady Laura at home, while even the French president chose not to take the top model Carla Bruni, partly because Islamic law does not provides that a man and a woman sleep under the same roof unless they are married.
The Saudis have decorated the airport in Riyadh, with French and American flags. The staff at the White House arrived today in Saudi Arabia has found the French flag still hangs in the auctions.
