Kenya: Finally an agreement in Beijing

President Kenya's Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga have agreed to work with a group of African personalities led by former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to resolve the tensions that developed after the recent re-election of Kibaki as president, challenged by Odinga. This was announced by the Ghanaian president, John Kufuor, in Kenya from days to a mediation that at first seemed a failure and which today has been appointed its General Kofi Annan.

"The parties have agreed to work together with a group of eminent African personalities headed by Kofi Annan signro ... to overcome their differences and any other matter included in the existing constitutional and electoral reforms," John Kufuor told the press. "Both sides have agreed - added Kufuor - who should end the violence and agreed that the dialogue should begin." Shortly after this announcement, however, an official of the Kenyan Foreign Ministry, who requested anonymity, claimed that "the President of Ghana has failed in the task to end the crisis. The two parties have not moved from their positions. " Raila Odinga refuses to recognize Kibaki's re-election - first elected president in 2002, succeeding Daniel arap Moi - accused of fraud in the elections of December 27th to steal the victory.
